ONE DAY TRIP TO THE CAVES ”YAGODINSKA” AND “DEVIL’S THROAT”

Starting point of this trip is the library club in the center of the village, and starting time is negotiable, so that it should be convenient for the participants. The trip is organized for a group of at least 8 tourists.
The first dwelling place to pass through is the village of Shiroka Luka. There one has the feeling of being teleported 1 -2 centuries back in time, in the age of Bulgarian Renaissance The village has spread amphitheatrically on both banks of the river Shirokolushka. The settlement is declared architectural and ethnographic reservation because of the numerous well preserved old houses, in the style of the traditional Rhodopean architecture, the old cobbled streets, the arcades of the bridges over the river, the songs and traditions, kept alive by the local people. Some of the sights one should see in the region:
Rock phenomenon “The Head” – this strangely formed rock stays about 100 meters from the road from Shiroka Luka to the village of Kukuvitsa. If looked upon from East the rock resembles the head of a ram. It can also be seen from the road Stoikite – Devin.
Rock phenomenon “The Maiden” – About 1 kilometer from Shiroka Luka There is a rock which from distance resembles a young maiden with a in hand. The figure is formed by the erosion of the rocks and the elements of nature. The legends about the figure are created by the imagination of the local people.
Further along the route just before Nastan – a suburb of Devin, comes into sight the next
Rock phenomenon – “The Elephant” – the figure is next to the road fork of the road Devin – Smolyan, after the hydroelectric plant “Devin” and just outside Nastan. The forces of nature have shaped the rock into the forms of an elephant. Most likely this rock is a remnant from a cave blown down by an earthquake.
Then the road leads through the villages of Grohotno and Gyovren and enters the magnificent Trigrad gorge. The gorge is carved in the marble rocks by the Trigrad River. The most impressive part of the gorge stretches for about 3 kilometers along the river. This part is named “The Tunnel” because of its narrowness and the great depth – the rocks on both banks tower up to the height of 250 meters The gorge itself is situated at altitude of 1 450 meters above sea level. Since 1963 the area of the “Trigrad Gorge” is declared territory under protection of the state.
One of the celebrities of the gorge is the cave named “The Devil’s Throat”. It has formed after movements and implosion of geological layers underground. After a 150 metros walk trough a man-made tunnel one enters an impressive underground hall of size and height to accommodate a building the size of St. Alexander Nevski cathedral.
After the visit in “The Devil’s Throat” the trip proceeds further to the Yagodinska cave.
This cave is one of the best-decorated underground touring sights in Bulgaria. It is also known under the name “The Imam’s Abyss”. The cave is situated in the valley of the river Buinovska and is a part of an unique complex carst formation in the gorge formed by Buinovska river. The cave stretches for more than 10 kilometers, and forms a five storeys of labyrinths and abysses.
Tourists enter the cave through a manmade tunnel. The natural entrance is 1 km further but is situated in a cliff 30 m above the road and the river level.
